R E D L A N D D E S I G N® is about crafting a meaningful life to me and the society.
From when I start off in 2007 and fast forward more than a decade later, it has become more than just a successful business model. It turns out to be a beautiful and meaningful platform for every individual that pouring their heart, soul and time to the brand throughout the journey of both personal and company’s growth. With a close relationship and a same vision are the reasons I describe my team mates as Family.
Storm and rain before the rainbow.. before the brand was founded, I am a young broke working class in a carpentry factory. Due to employer at that time mismanage the company fund, most of the staffs including me are months being unpaid. One of my ex-colleagues came up with suggestion to form my own company, brought me to a wood factory in a town name Tanah Merah to give input how a better off wood factory operates. Without taking my brand name into complexity consideration, I took this town name from this short trip, translate into English as ‘Red Land’ which sounds chic and cool at the same time, a brand name which going to shape next phase of my life .
Not being born from a well off family and struggle financially at that time, I start off my business at ground zero despite ‘not the right time’. Through canvassing, explore new development area and do networking to generate sales, I am grateful to my earlier clients whom rewarded small projects and contributing to my earlier portfolio.
Brain drain continues to challenge the local economic, me as part of the homegrown boy developing a homegrown brand, I deeply felt that I have a duty to play a small important role in preventing local professionals from departure to other countries. In my point of view, our talent should nourish our own industry. I start to brainstorm steps and strategies that I could take to fulfil my mission towards society contribution, grow the brand and the industry at the same time.
Recognizing my vulnerability on capital and resources, I start to invite new professionals in interior design industry to join as Business Associates, having a mindset where we should become partners instead of competitors to grow the brand.
It is a time before Uber and Airbnb existed, such collaboration concept in this industry was fresh and not everyone would buy the ideology. However, other than individuals that had formal training or/and graduate from academies, I believe one that has passion in creating beautiful things, patience throughout the design and fabrication process, having a high sense in taste are most important than knowing to sketch or mastering a software skill. I develop people who thirst for design result satisfaction and success to become entrepreneurs.
During the early peak of social media, I start to boost our brand profile online which brought our new brand through a whole new approach. I realize we were entering an era without need of real life interaction to generate sales or to have a strategic business location with a lavish renovated building to lure walk in prospects whom will be highly charged to regained the cost. This new strategy had lowered our operating cost and enable us to put more focus in creating a higher quality work profile which are more valuable to us in long run.
Throughout the journey, I encountered good and unqualified clients which both fortunate and unfortunately enlightened me in analyzing different kinds of human characteristics through these experiences. At the time I am typing, I could foresee how would a project will end; whether it will be a happy ending, achieve satisfaction from both party or a disaster where we will put our effort to turn down the enquiry politely prior after analyzed the risk. As these exposure is essential in our business, I start to upskill our Family in psychology studies, I am also enhancing my life value where money, society recognition or sponsored awards no longer assets to pursue. We getting more selective on taking a project, we give credit to every individual involved in our successful projects as appreciation and gratitude which will lift their professional reputation in the industry, I am more prouder to helped and support individual who came from less well-off family like me to start off their career here in R E D L A N D D E S I G N® and able to build their dream life through the brand platform that me and my squad family built.
